A loud bang like a gunshot, groans of scraping metal and a sickening crunch were heard as a Ford F-250 barreled into a car on the highway, sending it hurtling 30 yards from the original site of impact. What should have been a normal day on her way to school for then 17-year-old Laura Spradlin, a junior music therapy major from Memphis, Tenn., became a life forever altered thanks to a simple blind-spot on the freeway.

Ouachita vocal studies students earn 12 finalist honors in Southern Region NATS auditions

November 19, 2019

Ouachita Baptist University music students earned 12 finalist honors at the 2019 National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Southern Region Conference and Student Auditions. More than 300 students from colleges in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi attended the competition, which was held at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Ark., Nov. 6-9. Of all of those competing, 26 Ouachita students earned finalist or semifinalist honors.

Ouachita's Carvajal-Villamar presents paper at Society for Amazonian & Andean Studies meeting

Ouachita Baptist University’s Dr. Jerusa Carvajal-Villamar, assistant professor of Spanish, recently presented a paper at the biennial meeting of the Society for Amazonian & Andean Studies (SAAS). The conference was held Oct. 5-6 in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and was hosted by the University of Alabama.

Ouachita to host author, retired Lt. Col. Mark McGraw for memoir reading on Nov. 5

Ouachita Baptist University’s Department of Language and Literature will host author Dr. Mark McGraw in a debut reading of his newly published memoir, Behind Friendly Lines: Memoirs of a U.S. Marine in Chile, on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 6 p.m. The event will be held in room 200 of Hickingbotham Hall and is free and open to the public. There also will be time for questions from the audience after the reading.

Betsy Patterson, a senior secondary mathematics education major from Garland, Texas, was crowned Ouachita Baptist University’s 2019 Homecoming Queen before the Tiger football game on Saturday, Oct. 5.
